• Modern representations of women which are currently depicted in Bollywood films has led to a particular interest in how Indian women are represented in such films, and how they identify themselves in relation to these representations. Through qualitative data collection and data analysis methods, this study explores the role that Bollywood plays in the lives of South African Indian women. The redefining of identity of South African Indian women, due to the changes in the representation of the female Bollywood characters, is investigated. This study includes an analysis of the history and worldwide proliferation of Bollywood films, the representation of women in these films, the impact of feminist movements on the construction of representations of women in Bollywood, the identity construction of the film viewers and the defining of nation and identity within the South Africa Indian diaspora. The research conducted provides insight on how South African Indian women interpret representations of the female characters in Bollywood films, the extent to which they identify with these characters, and if they are influenced by the representations to redefine their identities.

  • When one spoke about 'the racial question' in pre-apartheid South Africa, one was not referring to conflicts between blacks and whites, but to frictions between the two white groups, namely the Afrikaners and the English-speaking. This book endeavors to explore how the Boer and the British dealt with their cultural differences and how this was reflected in their identity constructions, to examine how each group carved out their ambiguous identity(ies) as 'white Africans' at the beginning of the twentieth century and to evaluate how they balanced the ambivalence in their European-African heritage and commitments. By examining the portrayal of white identity in the writing of pre-apartheid South African authors, more specifically in the writings of William Charles Scully, Francis Carey Slater, Louis Leipoldt, Pauline Smith, Sarah Gertrude Millin, Roy Campbell, Laurens van der Post and Alan Paton, the goal of this book is to bring to light this negotiation and development of white identity as well as to reveal and analyze the identity constructions of Afrikaners and Anglo South Africans in pre-apartheid English literature.

  • This book studies the representation of identity politics in the Indian Tamil film Kannathil Muthamittal, which deals with the Sri Lankan ethnic conflict. Drawing on the influential role of cinema in politics on the Indian subcontinent, and the perceived shared identity of the Tamil communities in Sri Lanka and India, the book researches the film in relation to the conflict. It discusses the differences in conception of the Indian Tamil identity and the Sri Lankan Tamil identity (in the film), and argues that the Indian Tamil is represented as politically and culturally superior and more empowered than the Sri Lankan Tamil. Using existing literature on identity formation and the socio-cultural history of Tamil identities of Sri Lanka and India as a reference point, the representation of the two Tamil identities in the film are analysed.

  • Questions of identity continue to intrigue theologians in Africa, and African intellectuals often note communal emphases in African thought. This raises the question, How do ecclesiologies in Africa engage with identity concerns, and how do they envision the Christian identity? Stephanie Lowery argues in this book that theologians in Africa provide theological and biblical arguments regarding Christian identity that are relevant to individual Christians and ecclesiologies in all contexts. She also proposes the social identity approach as a tool that can both further articulate and advance these discussions. ""Drawing from her exposure to African Christianity and expertise in African theology, Lowery has produced an accessible and insightful work that discusses in a distinctive manner the relationship between identity and church as imagined in the works of some key African theologians. Identity and Ecclesiology makes a substantive contribution to the growing literature on contemporary African Christianity and African ecclesiology.""--Victor I. Ezigbo, Professor and Chair of Biblical and Theological Studies, Bethel University ""Stephanie A. Lowery's Identity and Ecclesiology is a brilliant, fascinating, and ground-breaking analysis of the historical trajectory, major themes, and prominent architects of the theological self-understanding of the community called church in Africa. • Seminar paper from the year 1998 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 2, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (FB05 Englisches Seminar), course: The City in American Literature and Culture, language: English, abstract: This paper will be concerned with the possible ways of construction of identity or the loss of identity - particularly the African American identity - in the modern metropolis as it is described in August Wilson's play Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Which ways to construct a proper identity present themselves to the characters in the play and what will happen when they fail to acknowledge and accept these ways? In this regard, I will examine the relevance of music, society, and Christian religion. Chapter Two will show that it is essential for the understanding of the alienation of the individual, in this case specifically the alienation of the African American musician, to take into consideration the differences between rural South and urban North and the different kinds of music connected to them. From the contrast of South and North, i.e. rural and urban springs the conflict between the old, down-home blues and the new, urban blues, which will later become swing or jazz respectively. The chapter will further address the question which impact this conflict will have on the life scripts of the individual characters. Moreover, the connection between the musician, his instrument, and the music will be examined and explained.Chapter Three will e...

  • Who is an African? At face value, the answer seems obvious. Surely, everyone knows who the African is, it would seem. But the answer becomes less obvious once other probing qualifiers are added to the question. How is the African identity constructed in the face of the mosaic of identities that people of African ancestry living within and beyond the continent bear? Do all categorised as Africans or as having an African pedigree perceive themselves as Africans? Are all who perceive themselves as Africans accepted as such? Are there levels of "Africanness", and are some more African than others? How does African identity interface with other levels of identity and citizenship in Africa? And what are the implications of the contentious nature of African identity and citizenship for the projects of pan-Africanism, the making of the Africa-nation, and Africa's development trajectories? Contributors to the volume, including Ali Mazrui, Kwesi Prah, Gamal Nkrumah, Helmi Sharawy and Marcel Kitissou, address these questions and more. They examine the issues of African identity and citizenship, the politics spurned by the co-existence of peoples of different Africanities in the same country, and the prospects of constructing an Africa-Nation in which Africans of all hues are as sentimentally attached to, as say, the Europeans are attached to Europe. Though the projects of pan-Africanism and the making of the Africa-nation have not achieved the desired levels of success, some...

  • The binding persons of African descent and Native Americans trace back centuries. In Oklahoma, both free and enslaved Africans lived among the "Five Civilized Tribes" - the Cherokee, Muscogee (Creek), Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Seminole Nations. These tribes officially sided with the Confederacy during the Civil War. After that internecine conflict, the tribes-except for the Chickasaws-adopted their respective "Freedmen." The term Freedmen embraced both formerly-enslaved persons of African ancestry, and those free persons of African ancestry who lived among the tribes. In the modern era, the tribes who granted citizenship to hide their Freedmen have sought to disenfranchise them. Freedmen descendants-persons of African ancestry with blood, affinity, and/or treaty ties to the Five Civilized Tribes-still struggle for recognition and inclusion. The Freedmen debate rages in the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, where legal battles in tribal and federal courts have waged, and a confrontation with the Bureau of Indian Affairs over the issue threatens tribal sovereignty. The Cherokee controversy is both illustrative and emblematic of larger questions about the intersection of race, Indian identity, and Native American sovereignty,Johnson traces historical relations between African-American and Native Americans, particularly in Oklahoma, "Indian Country." He examines some legal, political, economic, social and moral issues surrounding the present controversy over the t...

  • Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Mannheim (Lehrstuhl für Anglistische Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft), language: English, abstract: Travel writing helps travel writers to redefine their identity and to revise their concept of home as well as to determine its relative position in the world when using it as a frame of reference. In "Wanderlust: A Love Affaire with Five Continents", Elisabeth Eaves, both author and protagonist, renegotiates these two concepts - home and identity - in her inner journey of self-exploration. Making use of a qualitative and explorative approach, this paper investigates the question of how the search for identity and belonging is fashioned in the book. First, the theoretical part of the paper relates the concepts of home and identity to infer how home can function as a source of identity. These theoretical frameworks are then applied in the subsequent section to assess the manner and success of Elisabeth's strategies of identity construction providing an answer to the question whether her mobile lifestyle as a modern nomad leads to homelessness and lack of identity. Finally, the analysis section breaks down the narrative techniques Elisabeth uses to secure her public identity as travel writer and relates them to the construction of her personal identity.

  • Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, , course: International Relations, language: English, abstract: The relationship between South Africa and MAP emanates from South Africa's Foreign policy which advanced: Promotion of justice, democracy and human rights as well as prosperity and security achieved through economic development. South Africa's philosophy of African Renaissance directed at rejuvenating and renewing Africa transforms the continent into an arena of peace, security and stability, was blended into MAP. Economically, South Africa's adoption of neo-liberal policies in MAP were encouraged by South Africa's incorporation of neo-liberal visions in MAP and have been influenced by the country's adoption of Growth, Equity and Redistribution (GEAR) in 1996. GEAR became the macro-economic framework for all policies of the government whose aim was to make South Africa the preferred destination for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) as well as allowing the country to occupy a comfortable position in the rapidly globalising world. However, MAP has been grappling with numerous challenges and its dependency underpinning. These challenges include structural, endogenous and exogenous factors which continue to constrain Africa's endeavours. This paper focuses on the relationship between South African foreign policy and MAP. The paper explores foundations and the evolution of South African foreign policy datin...

  • Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Wuppertal, language: English, abstract: Throughout many years, African Americans have been struggling in defining and constructing their identity, especially male African Americans had problems to build up self-esteem and to reassure their cultural masculinity, which was undermined by white men. Not only does history confirm this struggle but so does literature. In liter-ature, many different aspects about male black identity and their struggle for identity can be found. However, one of the most important authors in this context is Langston Hughes. In his works, he focuses on the urban life of African Americans and the problems they had to face because of oppression and racism evoked by white Americans. Furthermore, Hughes wanted "to record and interpret the lives of the common black folk, their thoughts and habits and dreams, their struggle for political freedom and economic well-being" (Jemie: 1). By doing so in his writings, he took this struggle for and negotiation of racial identity to another level in developing a unique form of expression. In this thesis, I will concentrate on three major works by Langston Hughes: Mulatto: A Tragedy of the Deep South, "Simple speaks his mind" and Not without laughter. All three texts display emotional conflicts and the struggle for identity of African American men with "simplicity and dep...

  • Nago Grandma and White Papa is a signal work in Brazilian anthropology and African diaspora studies originally published in Brazil in 1988. This edition makes Beatriz Gois Dantas's historioethnographic study available to an English-speaking audience for the first time.Dantas compares the formation of Yoruba (Nago) religious traditions and ethnic identities in the Brazilian states of Sergipe and Bahia, revealing how they diverged from each other due to their different social and political contexts and needs. By tracking how markers of supposedly "pure" ethnic identity and religious practice differed radically from one place to another, Dantas shows the social construction of identity within a network of class-related demands and alliances. She demonstrates how the shape and meaning of "purity" have been affected by prolonged and complex social and cultural mixing, compromise, and struggle over time. Ethnic identity, as well as social identity in general, is formed in the crucible of political relations between social groups that purposefully mobilize and manipulate cultural markers to define their respective boundaries--a process, Dantas argues, that must be applied to understanding the experience of African-descended people in Brazil.

  • Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2009 in the subject African Studies, University of Nigeria (University of Ibadan, Nigeria), language: English, abstract: This paper focuses on the socio-political and economic issues involved in the production of oil producing and non-oil producing communities as categories of identification in Nigeria. Using Ilaje people of Ondo State as a case, this paper, through qualitative methods of study, examines the factors of history, elite politics, and the state in identity formulation and the effects which the construction of the "other" among a supposed homogeneous group has on the existing forms of social relationship. It is established from the study that though the advantage of the oil producing community identity is utilized to attain political and economic height, the identity remains subordinate to a much larger and inclusive Ilaje identity. Generally, this paper is a reflection on how identity is manipulated even in the local context to suit competition for resources. It discusses the cultural creation of space and its hegemonization in quest of making exclusive and optimum advantage of resource in the space. The paper concludes that even when the spatial differentiation is yet to generate any remarkable conflict, the feelings of "oneness" appears to have been sufficiently weakened.

  • The People's Typography: A Social Semiotic analysis explores the relationship between a specific visual dialect generated in South African informal settlements ('township typography') and mainstream cultural production, specifically the field of South African print advertising. This study starts with the premise that 'township typography' is a complex visual dialect generated by various economic and historical factors within the South African landscape. These factors translate into the adoption of specific tools, application methods and set of skills when producing letterforms in the South African informal settlement - making 'township typography' a unique dialect, that can be distinguished from letterforms found within mainstream graphic design. Due to the social origin of this dialect, and it's distinct appearance 'township typography' has the capacity to evoke and appeal to specific social, cultural and demographic structures in South African society. The People's Typography: A Social Semiotic Analysis reveals a process by which these features are drawn into South African print advertising as the result of a complex process of incorporation and institutional consecration.

  • Despite sustained continental and national struggles for autonomy, sovereignty and independence in postcolonial Africa, the continent is increasingly embattled by the forces of globalisation which threaten African identity that is at the core of African struggles for continental and national unity. Situating the debates in the contemporary discourses on decoloniality, global consumerism, global food apartheid and the challenges and prospects of the emergent sharing economies, this book critically examines the importation, use and implications of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and other such non-food products on African bodies, institutions and cultures. The book poses questions about how Africa can be decolonised both politically and in terms of global food apartheid and the dehumanising importation and use of “foreign” non-food products, some of which militate against the ethos of [African] identity, Renaissance and indigeneity.

What significance do forms of nationality have in the context of global, transnational media events? I would like to discuss this question by using the example of the construction of national identity through media discourse. Due to the limited extent of the paper, the focus will be on specifically selected studies with regard to constructing German national identity through national narratives and media coverage within the scope of the 2006 World Cup.
